Tuesday Coronavirus Update

There are now 31,140 cases of COVID-19 in Virginia, including 1,014 deaths. The latest count in Alleghany County is nine cases with four hospitalizations and Covington’s case count remains at two. Botetourt County now stands at 31 cases with 9 hospitalizations and three deaths.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is relaxing restrictions on beach goers in Virginia Beach ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

Northam said Monday that he is allowing the beaches to open under modified conditions that will allow sunbathing and surfing starting Friday. Northam said there will still be a ban on group sports, the use of alcohol, electronic speakers, and tents. And beach parking will be capped at 50% capacity, the governor said.

“My message to Virginians is this, and it is very simple: You must be responsible,” Northam said.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice on Monday expanded his plan to lift coronavirus restrictions while acknowledging that cases will likely rise as the economy reopens.

The Republican governor has added indoor malls to the growing list of businesses set to resume operations this week, saying it made sense to do so because big box stores are also reopening.
